Start with the power source already in your trunk
If there is a rear accessory socket within easy reach, Plug-In is the obvious place to start. You avoid tapping a circuit, and removing the light later is straightforward. The tradeoff is visible cable and a socket that stays occupied.
No rear socket? Look at the factory cargo light. The T-Tap version is designed to connect to that existing trunk-light power line, giving you a tidier route when the right circuit is available. This is the option for someone who cares more about a built-in look than the fastest possible setup.
Tesla owners have a separate decision. Our strip is offered in dedicated Model 3 and Model Y versions, so choose the one that matches the car instead of trying to adapt a universal connector.
Plug-In: easiest when a rear socket is available
Picture a hatchback or SUV with a power socket on one side of the cargo area. Plug in the strip, route it around the opening, and you can test the entire look before committing to the mounting path. For renters, leased vehicles, or anyone who dislikes electrical work, that simplicity matters.
The cable is also the compromise. Depending on the socket location, you may need to tuck extra length along the side trim, and the strip will share the outlet with any cooler, inflator, or other accessory you normally use there.
One more thing: do not assume every rear socket switches off the same way. Honda, for example, documents cargo accessory outlets that work only in ACCESSORY or ON, while Tesla describes accessory power around vehicle use, user presence, and its Keep Accessory Power On setting. T-Tap: cleaner integration with more installation work
If your trunk has no power socket—or you simply do not want a plug and cable sitting in view—the T-Tap version connects to an existing trunk-light power line. Done on the correct circuit, it can make the new strip feel much closer to the factory cargo lighting.
This is not the choice to make by guessing at wires. Disconnect power before working, identify the correct cargo-light circuit, confirm polarity, and test how that circuit behaves when the trunk opens and closes. We do not recommend copying a wire color from somebody else's car; trim level, model year, and vehicle electronics can change the layout.
If automotive wiring is outside your comfort zone, the cleaner appearance is not worth an uncertain connection. Use Plug-In where possible or have the T-Tap connection installed professionally.
Tesla Model 3 and Model Y: choose the matching connector
The Model 3 and Model Y versions are separate choices for a reason. Their rear cargo layouts are not something we treat as interchangeable, so order the option named for your vehicle.

The vehicle-specific route is the sensible choice when you want to avoid adapting the universal Plug-In or T-Tap hardware. It still deserves a dry run: connect and test the light first, then plan the strip around the opening without pinching it under trim or across a moving hatch area.

Test before you mount or trim the strip
The strip is 425 cm / 167 inches long, so there is room to follow many trunk and hatch openings. It can be shortened at the marked 2.5 cm cut points, but trimming should be the last step—not the first.
- Connect the chosen version and confirm the full strip lights correctly.
- Open, close, lock, and let the vehicle sit long enough to understand the actual on-off behavior.
- Lay out the 1 cm-wide strip around the opening and keep it clear of hinges, latches, weather seals, and pinch points.
- Only after the route works should you cut at a marked point, with the strip disconnected from power, and fit the included end cap.
That ten-minute dry run is easier than pulling up a mounted strip because the plug is on the wrong side or the hatch pinches the last few inches.

For most owners with a rear power socket, we would begin with Plug-In. It is the easiest way to find out whether you like a full trunk-opening glow without making the installation more involved than it needs to be.
Choose T-Tap because you want the cleaner integration—not because it sounds more professional. It asks more of the installer, and the circuit test matters. For a Model 3 or Model Y, skip the universal-connector debate and choose the version named for the car.

Will the Plug-In version turn off when I lock the car?
Maybe, but the car decides that—not the plug. Some cargo sockets switch with ACCESSORY or ON, while others follow different power-management rules. Plug the strip in, lock the vehicle, and check it again after the car has had time to go to sleep before you hide the cable.
Will the T-Tap version come on when I open the trunk?
It can follow the existing cargo-light circuit when connected to the correct line, but the exact behavior depends on the vehicle. Test the circuit and the strip through a full open-close-lock cycle before mounting. If you are not comfortable identifying that circuit, use a professional installer.
Can I use the Tesla Model Y version in a Model 3?
No. Choose the variant that matches the vehicle. The Model 3 and Model Y options are listed separately and should not be mixed.
Can I shorten the trunk LED strip after choosing the connector?
